Rant #236

Ok.. So over the last few years I have been part of a few state and regional dance ensembles. Whilst being a part of these I made a lot of new friends, met choreographers and learnt a lot about myself and who I was as a dancer. A lot of the girls and guys I danced with at regional ensembles and camps, moved to Sydney so they could attend actual dance high schools and maybe eventually become professional dancers or choreographers.

Now, you would think after spending $15,00+ just to attend the school or college, they would continue dancing after high school, maybe even do a performing arts course to finalise their studies. But no. All but 2 are going off to do different professions, some are even moving back to their hometown only 3 months into their new high school due to home sickness..

I’m sorry but if my parents paid the money it costs to let me live my dream, I would continue it and suck up the homesickness just for the god damn experience. My mum paid a shit load of money to get me to Sydney every year to attend camps, ensembles and performances because it’s something I want to do in the future, it’s something I want to eventually pursue as a career. These girls and guys that beg and nag and some even cried to get their family to pay for them to go to some of the most amazing dance schools in Australia because they wanted to be a professional dancer have now turned around, 3 years later, to say they just want to throw that in the bin and do something completely different.

Man would I kill to be in your position guys… Being taught by the most amazing choreographers, being part of the most amazing ensembles and having the upper hand in auditions because of that, would be something I would kill to have had. Instead I have to work my ass off just to earn money to live and get by, whilst attending a school I had to travel miles to audition for…
